Survey of English Dialects
The Survey of English Dialects (SED) was a comprehensive research project conducted in the 1950s and 1960s in the UK to document and study the various regional accents and dialects of English. Researchers collected data through interviews and questionnaires across different regions, capturing unique linguistic features, vocabulary, and pronunciations. The aim was to preserve the rich diversity of English spoken throughout the country, highlighting how language varies based on geography, social class, and culture. The findings contributed significantly to sociolinguistics and our understanding of linguistic change in England.
