Surfactant Replacement Therapy

Surfactant Replacement Therapy is a medical treatment used for babies, especially premature ones, whose lungs haven't produced enough natural surfactant. Surfactant is a substance that helps keep the tiny air sacs in the lungs open so they can efficiently exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Without enough surfactant, the lungs can collapse, making it hard for the baby to breathe. The therapy involves administering a synthetic or natural surfactant directly into the baby’s lungs through a breathing tube. This helps improve lung function, making breathing easier and reducing the risk of lung-related complications.
