Supreme Soviet

The Supreme Soviet was the highest legislative body in countries like the former Soviet Union. It functioned as the national parliament, responsible for passing laws, approving government decisions, and shaping policy. Members were elected representatives who debated and ratified important legislation. While it often appeared to have significant authority, in practice, especially in the Soviet Union, its decisions largely reflected the directives of the ruling Communist Party. The Supreme Soviet symbolized the formal governmental structure but was frequently more a rubber-stamp institution than an independent policymaker.
