Sulphur Dioxide
Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) is a colorless, pungent gas produced mainly from burning fossil fuels like coal and oil, especially in power plants and industrial processes. It can also result from volcanic eruptions. In the atmosphere, SO₂ can react with water vapor to form sulfuric acid, contributing to acid rain, which harms ecosystems, aquatic life, and infrastructure. While it plays a role in the Earth's sulfur cycle, high concentrations of sulfur dioxide can cause respiratory problems and irritation in humans, making its control important for air quality and environmental health.
