subtalar arthrodesis

Subtalar arthrodesis is a surgical procedure that permanently fuses the bones in the subtalar joint, located between the heel bone (calcaneus) and the ankle bone (talus). This joint allows side-to-side movement of the foot. The surgery is typically performed to relieve pain from conditions like arthritis, instability, or chronic infection. During the procedure, the surgeon removes damaged cartilage and joins the bones together using screws or plates, allowing them to heal into a single, solid bone. This reduces joint movement, which can alleviate pain and restore better foot function.
