Stress-diathesis model

The stress-diathesis model suggests that mental health conditions develop from a combination of underlying vulnerabilities (diathesis) and stressful life events. Diathesis is like a predisposition built over time, such as genetics or early experiences. When a person with this vulnerability encounters significant stressors—like trauma, loss, or high-pressure situations—they may be more likely to develop mental health issues. Essentially, the model highlights that both inherent factors and external pressures interact, influencing whether and how a mental health condition manifests.
