Strain Theory

Strain Theory, developed by sociologist Robert K. Merton, suggests that society sets cultural goals, like financial success, but not everyone has the means to achieve them through acceptable methods. This disparity creates "strain," leading individuals to adapt in various ways: conforming, innovating (finding new methods), ritualizing (sticking to traditional means without achieving goals), retreating (withdrawing from society), or rebelling. Thus, people may resort to delinquent or criminal behavior when they feel blocked from legitimate paths to success, highlighting how societal pressures can influence individual choices and actions.
