Stoneman's Raid
Stoneman’s Raid was an American Civil War military operation in 1865, led by Union General George Stoneman. It involved a daring cavalry expedition deep into Confederate territory in North Carolina and Virginia, aiming to destroy Confederate supplies, infrastructure, and communication lines. The raid sought to divert Confederate resources from other fronts and weaken their capacity to continue fighting. While it caused some damage, it was ultimately limited in strategic impact and faced challenges such as difficult terrain and Confederate resistance, but it demonstrated aggressive Union efforts to disrupt the Confederacy’s war effort late in the conflict.
