Static Friction

Static friction is the force that resists the initiation of motion between two surfaces in contact. It acts when an object is at rest and must be overcome to start moving it. This force depends on the surfaces' roughness and the force pressing them together. Static friction increases with applied force up to a maximum limit; once this limit is exceeded, the object begins to slide, and kinetic friction takes over. It's essential for everyday activities, like pushing a heavy piece of furniture, where static friction must be overcome to initiate movement.
