Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) are patents that cover technologies deemed necessary to comply with a widely adopted industry standard, such as 4G or 5G wireless communication. Because these patents are fundamental to enabling products to work with the standard, their holder has a special obligation to license them fairly, reasonably, and non-discriminately (FRAND). This ensures companies can develop compatible products without violating patents while promoting innovation and competition within the industry.
