Stalingrad Pocket
The Stalingrad Pocket was a crucial military encirclement during World War II, where German forces became trapped in and around the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd), in the Soviet Union, in 1942-1943. The Soviet Red Army launched a fierce counteroffensive, sealing off the German 6th Army, cutting off supplies and reinforcements. After months of intense combat and suffering, the Germans surrendered in February 1943. This defeat marked a turning point in the war, ending Germany’s advance into the Soviet Union and shifting the momentum in favor of the Allies on the Eastern Front.
