Stalag Luft III

Stalag Luft III was a German POW camp during World War II, located near Görlitz, Silesia (now Poland). It primarily held Allied airmen, including British and American pilots, captured during the war. Established in 1942, it became famous for a daring escape in March 1944, known as "The Great Escape," where 76 prisoners attempted to flee through a tunnel. Only three successfully escaped to freedom; the rest were recaptured, and many faced execution. The camp was designed with strict security but became notable for the ingenuity and resilience of its prisoners in the face of adversity.
