Sri Lankan Tamils

Sri Lankan Tamils are an ethnic group primarily native to the northern and eastern regions of Sri Lanka. They speak Tamil, one of the country's official languages, and have a distinct cultural and religious identity, mainly practicing Hinduism. Historically, they have sought greater political recognition and autonomy, leading to long-standing tensions with the Sinhalese majority. This conflict resulted in a violent civil war from 1983 to 2009, causing significant suffering and displacement. Today, Tamils continue to work towards cultural preservation, political rights, and reconciliation within Sri Lanka.
