Squanto

Squanto was a Native American from the Wampanoag tribe who played a crucial role in early American history. Fluent in English because he had been among Europeans earlier, he helped the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony by teaching them how to grow crops like corn, beans, and squash, and how to hunt and fish. He also helped negotiate peace between the Pilgrims and other Native tribes, increasing their chances of survival. Squanto’s knowledge and guidance were vital during the colony’s difficult first years, making him a key figure in the story of early European-Native American relations.
