Spontaneous Breathing Trials (SBT)

Spontaneous Breathing Trials (SBT) are tests conducted in a healthcare setting to assess a patient’s ability to breathe without assistance. During an SBT, a patient who has been on a ventilator is temporarily taken off the machine and monitored as they breathe on their own. This helps determine if they can maintain adequate oxygen levels and remove carbon dioxide. Successful SBTs indicate readiness for extubation (removal of the breathing tube), potentially allowing the patient to breathe independently. The trial is essential for ensuring patient safety and recovery before ending mechanical ventilation support.
