split-brain research
Split-brain research involves studying individuals who have had the connection between the brain's two hemispheres, called the corpus callosum, surgically severed. This procedure was originally done to treat severe epilepsy. Researchers discovered that each hemisphere can function independently and specialize in different tasks. For example, the left hemisphere typically handles language and logical reasoning, while the right focuses on spatial awareness and creativity. When split-brain patients are presented with information to one side of their visual field, only the corresponding hemisphere processes it, revealing how the two sides can operate separately yet coordinate in everyday activities.
