Sphincterotomy

Sphincterotomy is a surgical procedure primarily used to treat issues related to the anal sphincter, such as chronic anal fissures or certain types of anal abscesses. The anal sphincter consists of muscles that control bowel movements. During the procedure, a surgeon makes a small cut in the sphincter muscle to relieve tension, promote healing, and reduce pain. This can help improve symptoms and prevent the fissures from recurring. While it may sound daunting, most patients experience significant relief and improved quality of life following the surgery, and it is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
