Sphacteria is a small Greek island near the coast of mainland Greece, known historically for its strategic importance in ancient warfare. Located in the Aegean Sea, it played a key role during the Peloponnesian War because controlling it meant controlling access to the Peloponnese. In 425 BCE, Athenian forces defeated Spartan troops on Sphacteria, which was a significant military victory that strengthened Athens’ position. Today, Sphacteria is a quiet island with archaeological remains, offering insight into ancient Greek history and strategic military importance.
