Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator who led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic in 73-71 BCE, known as the Third Servile War. Initially a gladiator, he escaped and joined forces with other runaway slaves, amassing a large army that fought against Roman forces. His rebellion highlighted the harsh conditions of slavery in Rome and challenged the power of the Roman elite. Although ultimately defeated, Spartacus became a symbol of resistance and the struggle for freedom. His story has inspired many movements for justice throughout history and continues to resonate in popular culture today.
