Sparidae (family)
The Sparidae family, commonly known as sea breams or porgies, comprises marine fish characterized by a laterally compressed body, a steep head profile, and prominent teeth adapted for their omnivorous diet. Found mainly in warm temperate and tropical waters, these fish vary in size from small to large and are valued both ecologically and commercially. They often inhabit rocky or sandy bottoms, and many species are targeted by fisheries worldwide. Sparids play an important role in their ecosystems as prey and predators, and several, like the gilt-head borg, are popular for recreational and commercial fishing due to their flavor and firm texture.
