SOST (sclerostin)

Sclerostin, also known as SOST, is a protein produced mainly by bone cells called osteocytes. It plays a key role in regulating bone growth by inhibiting the activity of cells that build new bone, called osteoblasts. When sclerostin levels are high, it suppresses bone formation, leading to decreased bone density. Conversely, reducing sclerostin activity can promote bone growth, which is why it’s a target for treatments aimed at conditions like osteoporosis—where bones become weak and fragile. Understanding sclerostin helps in developing therapies to maintain healthy bone strength.
