Solid Organ Transplantation
Solid organ transplantation is a medical procedure where a healthy organ from a donor is surgically placed into a recipient whose organ has failed or is diseased. Common organs transplanted include kidneys, hearts, lungs, livers, and pancreases. Donors can be living or deceased, and matching the donor and recipient involves considering blood type and tissue compatibility to reduce rejection risk. Post-surgery, recipients must take immunosuppressive medications to prevent their immune systems from attacking the new organ. This procedure can significantly improve quality of life and survival for individuals with severe organ dysfunction.
