Soeharto's Resignation
Soeharto's resignation in 1998 marked the end of his long-standing rule as Indonesia’s president, following widespread protests and economic crisis. After over 30 years in power, dissatisfaction grew due to corruption, authoritarian governance, and economic instability, which worsened during the Asian financial crisis. Facing mounting public pressure and loss of political support, Soeharto announced his resignation on May 21, 1998. His departure opened Indonesia to democratic reforms and greater political freedom, ending a period dominated by his centralized control.
