social comparison

Social comparison is the process of evaluating ourselves by comparing our abilities, achievements, or qualities to those of others. This natural tendency helps us gauge where we stand and can influence our self-esteem and motivation. For example, seeing a colleague succeed may inspire or motivate you, but it could also make you feel inadequate if you perceive a gap. Social comparison occurs consciously or unconsciously and can be directed upward (comparing to those who are better off) or downward (comparing to those who are worse off). It plays a key role in shaping self-perceptions and social interactions.
