Smectic phases

Smectic phases are a type of liquid crystal arrangement where molecules are organized into well-defined, layered structures. In this state, molecules tend to align parallel to each other within each layer, but their positions across different layers are less ordered. This layered organization gives smectic phases unique optical properties, making them useful in displays and other advanced materials. Unlike the more fluid nematic phase, smectic phases have a degree of positional order along one dimension, combining fluid-like mobility within layers with a regular layered pattern overall.
