Siglecs
Siglecs (Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins) are specialized proteins found on the surface of immune cells. They act as sensors that recognize specific sugar molecules called sialic acids on the surfaces of other cells or pathogens. This recognition helps immune cells distinguish between healthy and abnormal or foreign cells, regulating immune responses to prevent unnecessary inflammation or attack. Siglecs play a crucial role in maintaining immune balance and preventing autoimmune diseases by sending inhibitory signals when they detect signals indicating normal, healthy cells.
