Siege of Leningrad
The Siege of Leningrad was a prolonged military blockade during World War II, lasting from September 1941 to January 1944. German forces encircled the Soviet city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), aiming to capture it. The blockade resulted in severe food shortages, leading to widespread hunger and suffering among civilians, with many thousands perishing. Despite the harsh conditions, the citizens and military of Leningrad resisted fiercely. The siege lasted nearly 900 days, making it one of the longest and most devastating sieges in history, ultimately ending with the Soviet Army breaking the encirclement and lifting the blockade.
