Siege of Badajoz
The Siege of Badajoz, fought in 1812 during the Peninsular War, was a major battle between Allied forces (British, Spanish, Portuguese) and Napoleon’s French army. The Allies aimed to capture the strategic fortress of Badajoz in southwestern Spain to weaken French control. After months of blockade and intense assaults, they finally breached the city’s defenses through a massive breakout attack, resulting in a hard-fought victory. The capture was significant because it disrupted French supply lines and boosted Allied morale, but it also involved heavy casualties and highlighted the brutal nature of 19th-century siege warfare.
