Sickle Cell Trait

Sickle cell trait is a genetic condition where a person inherits one normal hemoglobin gene and one sickle hemoglobin gene. This means most of their red blood cells are healthy, but some can take on a sickle or crescent shape. Usually, individuals with this trait do not experience symptoms or health problems; however, in rare situations like intense physical exertion or low oxygen levels, these abnormal cells can cause complications. Sickle cell trait is generally harmless and more common in people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian ancestry.
