Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster), which remains dormant in the body after a person has chickenpox. It usually appears as a painful skin rash with blisters on one side of the body or face. Symptoms may also include fever and headache. Shingles is more common in older adults and those with weakened immune systems. A vaccine is available to help reduce the risk and severity of shingles. Early treatment with antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and speed recovery.
