Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are a type of bacteria that can cause serious intestinal infections. They produce a toxin called Shiga toxin, which can damage the lining of the intestines and even damage the kidneys in severe cases. People often get infected through contaminated food, water, or contact with animals, especially undercooked ground beef or raw vegetables. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes vomiting. In some cases, especially in children or vulnerable people, it can lead to a serious complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which may cause kidney failure.
