Sewel Convention
The Sewel Convention is a principle in UK politics that states the UK Parliament will not legislate on devolved matters—issues like education and health—in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland without the consent of the relevant devolved legislature. This convention helps maintain the autonomy of these regions while acknowledging the UK Parliament's sovereignty. Essentially, it ensures that local governments have a say on topics that affect their own jurisdictions, fostering cooperation and respect for their legislative powers. However, it is not legally binding, meaning Parliament can technically override this convention if it chooses.
