
Sergeant Stubby
Sergeant Stubby was a highly decorated stray dog who became a morale-boosting mascot and effective soldier during World War I. He was found wandering near Yale University and later enlisted with the U.S. Army's 26th Infantry Division. Stubby participated in key battles, alerting soldiers to dangers, locating wounded, and even capturing a German officer. Known for his intelligence and bravery, he became the first dog to be promoted to sergeant and the first to be given rank in the U.S. military. Stubby’s story highlights the important bond between humans and animals in wartime.
