Self-Respect Movement

The Self-Respect Movement was a social and cultural campaign in India, initiated in the early 20th century, primarily by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Its goal was to challenge and dismantle caste-based discrimination and promote dignity, equality, and self-worth among all communities, especially marginalized groups like Dalits. The movement encouraged people to reject caste hierarchies, break free from social stigmas, and adopt modern, respectful attitudes towards themselves and others. It also promoted education, economic empowerment, and social reform, fostering a sense of pride and self-respect independent of traditional caste labels.
