Scotland during the Interregnum
During the Interregnum (1649–1660), Scotland experienced a period of political upheaval following the execution of King Charles I and the abolition of the monarchy. The country was governed largely by republican ideas, with a focus on parliamentary authority and religious reforms. Scottish forces initially aligned with the English Parliament, fighting in the British Civil Wars, but later sought greater independence and religion-based governance. This turbulent period saw the rise of various governing bodies, including the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, until the monarchy was restored in 1660 with King Charles II.
