Schistosoma
Schistosoma is a type of parasitic worm, called a helminth, that causes schistosomiasis, a disease affecting millions worldwide. These worms live in freshwater snails for part of their life cycle and then infect humans through skin contact with contaminated water. Once inside the body, they develop into adult worms and settle in blood vessels, where they lay eggs that can cause inflammation and tissue damage. The disease can lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue. Control efforts focus on sanitation, avoiding contaminated water, and medications to treat infected individuals.
