Scheduled Tribes of India
Scheduled Tribes (STs) in India refer to specific communities recognized by the government as socially and economically disadvantaged. This classification aims to promote their welfare and ensure representation in education, employment, and politics. STs often have distinct cultures, languages, and traditions, and many reside in remote or forested areas. The Indian Constitution provides certain protections and benefits to STs, including reservations in government jobs and educational institutions, to help uplift their status and ensure equality in society. There are over 700 officially recognized Scheduled Tribes across various states, each with unique identities and challenges.
