Scapular Notching
Scapular notching is a common complication following reverse shoulder replacement surgery. It occurs when the edge of the shoulder blade (scapula) makes contact with the artificial shoulder joint (especially the metal ball), causing a small indentation or damage over time. This contact typically happens during shoulder movements and can lead to reduced shoulder function, instability, or wear of the implant. Factors like implant positioning and individual anatomy influence its development. While often manageable, significant notching may require attention from a healthcare provider to ensure optimal shoulder performance and longevity of the prosthesis.
