Santal social structure
The Santal social structure is organized around a kinship-based system, emphasizing family and clan ties. Society is divided into exogamous clans, meaning individuals must marry outside their clan. These clans form larger groups called **gotras** and are further organized under a hierarchical system that includes village elders, local leaders, and traditional priests. The hierarchy maintains social order, resolves disputes, and preserves customs. Respect for elders and hereditary roles are important, and social interactions are guided by longstanding traditions. This structure supports social cohesion, cultural identity, and community cooperation among the Santals.
