San Domingue

San Domingue was a French colony on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean, established in the 17th century. It became one of the world's most profitable colonies due to its vast sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a heroic slave rebellion led by Toussaint Louverture resulted in the colony becoming the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean, known as Haiti, in 1804. This revolution significantly impacted global history by challenging colonialism and slavery, establishing Haiti as a symbol of resistance and freedom.
