Sallekhana
Sallekhana is an ancient Jain practice involving the voluntary, gradual reduction of food and liquid intake to approach death peacefully. It’s undertaken by individuals who have resolved to end their life in a spiritually disciplined manner, often to purify the soul, let go of attachments, or prepare for spiritual liberation. The practice emphasizes mindfulness, non-violence, and acceptance, and is performed with dignity, respecting the natural process of dying. It is regarded as a moral choice reflecting deep spiritual commitment, distinct from suicide, as it is performed with awareness and spiritual intent within the Jain ethical framework.
