Salò Republic

The Salò Republic, also known as the Italian Social Republic, was a puppet state established by Nazi Germany in northern Italy from 1943 to 1945. Led by dictator Benito Mussolini after Italy's surrender to the Allies, it was a collaborationist regime that committed widespread violence and repression. The republic served as a base for German military operations and was marked by brutal anti-partisan activities. It lasted until Allied forces liberated Italy, marking the end of fascist rule in the country. The Salò Republic is remembered for its association with wartime atrocities and its role in Italy’s difficult post-war history.
