S.S. Central America (shipwreck)

The S.S. Central America was a gold-laden steamship that sank during a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina in September 1857. The disaster claimed around 400 lives and was one of the worst maritime tragedies in U.S. history. The ship was carrying gold from the California Gold Rush, which further enhanced its historical significance. In the 1980s, treasure hunters discovered the wreckage, recovering millions in gold coins and artifacts. The sinking had economic repercussions, influencing the financial markets and leading to a panic in the U.S. due to the loss of the gold cargo.
