Ryuukyuu Kingdom
The Ryukyu Kingdom was an independent feudal state that existed from the 15th to 19th centuries on the Ryukyu Islands, including present-day Okinawa. It was a maritime trade hub connecting Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia, known for its rich culture, unique language, and powerful maritime skills. The kingdom maintained a degree of autonomy but also paid tribute to China. In 1879, Japan officially annexed it, ending its independence. Today, Okinawa’s history as the Ryukyu Kingdom influences its cultural identity and regional heritage.
