Ryan & Deci (2000) theory overview
Ryan and Deci (2000) developed Self-Determination Theory, which explains what motivates people. It suggests that individuals are most motivated and satisfied when their actions fulfill three basic needs: competence (feeling effective), autonomy (having control over one’s choices), and relatedness (connecting positively with others). When these needs are met, people experience more genuine motivation, growth, and well-being. Conversely, when these needs are neglected, motivation can decrease, leading to feelings of frustration or disengagement. This theory helps us understand what drives human behavior and how to foster environments that support overall psychological health.
