Rupert's Land
Rupert's Land was a vast area of roughly 1.5 million square miles in North America, controlled by the Hudson's Bay Company from 1670 to 1870. It covered much of present-day northern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and parts of the U.S. Northwest. It was primarily a fur-trading territory, with a relationship between Indigenous peoples and European traders. In 1870, Canada acquired Rupert's Land, leading to the expansion of Canadian territory westward. Its history reflects the economic, colonial, and Indigenous dynamics that shaped Canada's development.
