RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary)

The Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) was the police force responsible for maintaining law and order in Northern Ireland from 1922 until 2001. It was tasked with preventing crime and ensuring public safety amid complex political and sectarian tensions. The RUC was often viewed differently by communities—some saw it as a necessary security force, while others perceived it as biased or associated with unfair practices during periods of conflict, particularly during The Troubles. In 2001, the RUC was replaced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) as part of efforts to reform policing and foster community trust.
