RPE65
RPE65 is a gene that provides instructions for making a protein essential for normal vision. This protein plays a key role in the visual cycle, a process that converts light into electrical signals in the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye. When RPE65 functions correctly, it helps us see clearly. Mutations or changes in this gene can disrupt this process, leading to vision problems such as progressive blindness. RPE65 is also a target for gene therapy, where healthy copies of the gene can be introduced to improve or restore vision in affected individuals.
