Robert B. McFerrin was an accomplished American baritone and the first African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, which he did in 1955. Known for his powerful voice and rich musicality, McFerrin's career spanned various genres, including opera and folk music. He gained further recognition through his work in the 1960s when he provided the singing voice for the character of Porgy in a film adaptation of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess." McFerrin was not only a talented performer but also a pioneering figure in diversifying the classical music landscape. He is the father of musician Bobby McFerrin.
