Rio Grande Rift

The Rio Grande Rift is a geological feature in the southwestern United States and parts of northern Mexico, formed by stretches and thinning of the Earth's crust. This rifting began around 30 million years ago and created a low area, or "rift valley," through which the Rio Grande River flows. It has shaped the landscape, creating unique geological formations, hot springs, and natural resources. The rift is significant for understanding tectonic processes, as it reflects the gradual pull-apart of the Earth's surface, leading to various seismic and volcanic activity in the region.
